Words For Hire

Darkness settles in the ways of the old
Lovers quarrel and sleep in the cold
Enemies call truce and savour the night
Drinking and singing, why do we fight?

The heart speaks of a delighted few
They stray far from the heart, far from view
Maybe to cross paths again another time
This time, the world saw their love as a crime

The owls stare vividly and deep in the dark
Searching for unsuspecting prey in the park
While lost souls wandered for a purpose
To blame someone for their curse

We all are just trying to fit in this dark place
All of us working to earn some solace
Gathered around the huge burning fire
Drinking and singing, our words for hire. – T.S.
