Broken But Fighting Hearts

She could have been lightning
In a storm of dark rainy skies
The way I saw her with all that fierceness
I doubt anybody could see her in that disguise
I could drive for a thousand miles
Just to make her smile when she cried
And the way she would tell tales of her life
She could very well be the turning tide

Vodka and coke was what we drank that time
We cheered to the moments we were alive
And even though everything wasn’t butterflies
We knew we were strong enough to survive
You could knock on my door anytime you want
I want to make you feel like you are the only thing that matters
And there are times when I know you feel insecure
I promise to hold you close and never fall apart even if you shatter

Because the spark I saw in your eyes
I know that it will always be the real thing
And we all falter in life, that’s not what we are afraid of
We are scared of the what the future will bring
I know how you talk when you are angry
And I know how you would crash and burn into the night
Silently believing in your dreams, never revealing it
Because we all, deep inside of us, pack a good fight

And if you fall while your guns keep blazing
I will always be there to fight by your side
Because we believe in a cause that we both know in our hearts
And that’s a better way to go than being cast aside
I don’t mind spending every single waking day
To shelter you from the storm that invokes inside you every day
Because I know how important is a heart that stays
When everyone else that you trusted upon is walking away

And I remember when I was down and beaten and bruised
You came and sat next to me talking over gulps of wine
You led me off to dreams and you were there when my eyes opened
You kissed my half closed eye and said everything would be fine
In that moment, you see my love, stood a fact that I always knew
The good, the bad and the worse, we would still make it through
Because I believed in a love that I saw in those eyes
And you laid your head on my chest, fully aware you knew it too

And we just laid there till the sun gave way to the stars
Counting the beating of each other’s broken but fighting hearts
There would be a fight undoubtedly and we would greet it every day
Because with you on my side, no matter what comes, I’ll be okay
